GPS Walking in Crete

We are gradually walking all of our existing guided walks with a GPS navigator and collecting each walk's track and waypoint data. So far, we have eight walks of between 6 and 10 miles where GPS data has been plotted. This data is freely available to our guests to use with their own GPS, along with some route notes to help with the trickier sections. The data is taken and used at guests' own risk, and we do not provide any loan or rental GPS units. (Data is held in GPX file format, and we use Easy GPS or Map Source software along with a Garmin (Etrex type) serial cable for data transfer. For other GPS types or file formats, you will need to arrange your own method of data input to your machine). Geocaching: there are 2 geocache sites within easy reach of Footscapes. The first, Bonripari Fortress, is easily walked from our front gate, so you don't even need to take your car. The second, Vryssinas summit, is a short (3km) drive away to the start of the walk. Slightly further afield are 2 more geocache sites, both achievable within a full day out from Footscapes (Imbros Gorge and Mount Psiloritis). If you are geocache "bagging", and want to pick up some new caches on Crete, we will be more than happy to point you in the right direction.

GPS Training Courses in Crete

New for 2009 are our Beginners' GPS Courses, aimed firmly at those who have recently acquired, or are thinking of acquiring, their first handheld GPS for use while walking. Courses take place over 3 days during a week's holiday at Footscapes, and each day has a mixture of class - based tuition followed by practical fieldwork. Course content is available here (opens as a Word document). Please note that these courses are based around our own GPS units (Garmin eTrex and Oregon) but you are more than welcome to bring your own device. Loan units are available to course participants.
